I’m sure I’ve watched some weird movies!
In a way, Japanese anime itself feels weird to me sometimes. It portrays emotions at an extremely high level, taking them to the maximum.
The movie The Gods Must Be Crazy felt weird to me, especially because of its main protagonist, who belongs to a tribal community. I remember finding him very unusual when I first watched the film.
But how do we define weirdness?
I think it depends on what we’ve grown up with and what we’re used to seeing. Other cultures, places, and traditions can seem a little strange to us, but they’re also fascinating because they’re different from our own experiences.
Even movies made in our own language can feel weird. For example, I recently watched Rao Bahadur. Its screenplay is quite different, with the director’s imagination running wild. The character arcs and story are fairly ordinary, but the screenplay and visual presentation feel very different compared with other films in Tollywood.
I also enjoy Jim Carrey’s movies because he portrays characters in such unique ways and brings a distinctive style of comedy to his films.
Perhaps weirdness isn’t always about something being strange. Sometimes, it’s simply about experiencing something outside what we’re used to.
