First of all, I usually don’t watch movies or read books that have tropes that I find annoying. If I start watching a movie or reading a book and find it boring, I simply stop.
However, there is one thing that sometimes annoys me in movies: overhyping characters.
Over-dramatization and over-the-top action scenes can sometimes take away from the actual story. I understand that movies are meant to entertain, and they don’t always have to be realistic or perfect. But when the dramatization becomes excessive, it can be annoying to me.
As for books, I can’t really think of a particular trope that annoys me. Whatever books I have read so far, I’ve enjoyed them. Of course, there are books with similar storylines and familiar elements, but even then, I usually find something unique in the way the story is told.
For example, take The Lord of the Rings and The Sword of Shannara. Both have some very similar elements: a powerful villain, strong guiding characters, protagonists who aren’t exactly the typical “hero material,” ancient artifacts, reliable sidekicks, and a journey that changes the characters along the way.
Yet the way these two stories are told is different. Their characters, world-building, events, and even their endings take different directions.
After reading The Lord of the Rings, I didn’t feel bored or uninterested while reading The Sword of Shannara. Quite the opposite, I found the storyline interesting, and the ending completely surprised me.
So, I think similar tropes aren’t necessarily a bad thing. What matters most is how the author or filmmaker uses them to tell the story.
