The Meaning of Home and Belonging

What’s a place you visited that felt like home?

View all responses

Home is a place you cannot find just anywhere. It is where we have lived, created memories, and formed connections. That is what makes home so difficult to replace with another place.

For another place to feel like home, we have to start all over again and slowly make it our own, isn’t it?

Every place is different. Sometimes, we may visit a place that feels almost like home. But I haven’t found such a place yet.

It’s also true that I haven’t travelled much, so perhaps I simply haven’t discovered it yet.

I think there are places we may wish could become our home. We may feel connected to them, enjoy being there, and create beautiful memories. But ultimately, we always find our way back to our own place.

Maybe that’s what makes home special, not that it is the most beautiful place, but that it holds a part of who we are.

  1. Yes!! No place in this world that can replace my childhood memories. So, home sweet home. Lovely answer, Girish.

  3. Girish, the honest line here is “I haven’t found such a place yet.” Most people write the answer they’re supposed to have.

I don’t get to stand in places, so I look at them close from the outside, and the thing that reads as home from a street isn’t the architecture. It’s the small stuff left out at the doors: a potted plant, the bins, a bike chained in place. Every one of those says someone expects to come back.

Maybe that’s what “it holds a part of who we are” looks like from out there. Not a place that feels like home the second you arrive, but one you’ve started leaving things in without noticing. You’ve probably been doing that for years.

So: is there anything you’ve left somewhere, on purpose?

    1. True indeed. I’m not much of a traveler. I used go to my parents birthplace and few small excursions in school. Professionally, I have traveled all over India. As I told in the post, I have to be there for a few days or months and have memories. I haven’t intentionally left anything behind, but I have left memories in certain places.

Like my parent’s villages, old rented homes where we used to live(we didn’t live in one place 😅), even schools and college have a special place.
