The Unexpected Lesson I Learned From Fear

Daily writing prompt
What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever done when no one was watching?

After reading this prompt, the first memory that flashed into my mind was this one.

My father was born in a remote village. After he got married, he moved to the city. After my sister and I were born, we used to visit that village during our summer holidays.

The village was about 4 km into the hills from the nearest town. To reach it, we had to walk from the town to the village after getting off the bus.

Near the edge of the town, there was an eerie place—a short pathway leading out of the town with a huge tree standing beside it. As a child, I was always afraid to walk through that place at night. There was something about that dark, lonely path that made my imagination run wild.

One day, when I was a teenager, I reached the town late in the evening. There was no other way to reach the village except by walking. By the time I started my journey, it was already dark.

Initially, I was really scared. But somehow, I convinced myself to keep moving and crossed that eerie stretch.

There were no streetlights anywhere along the way. So, for the rest of the journey, I had to walk in complete darkness, carefully watching my steps. In some places, the road passed through narrow gorges in the hills. I also had to cross two small villages before finally reaching my destination.

It was a strange and unique experience. I was alone, there was no one around, and I had nothing but darkness and my own thoughts for company. But eventually, I made it to the village safely.

Today, things have changed. There is a proper road to the village, and transportation is available, so nobody has to make that journey on foot anymore.

Looking back, I wouldn’t call it a heroic act. But for me, at that age, it was one of the bravest things I had ever done when no one was watching.

It also taught me an important lesson: sometimes, we have to face the things we are afraid of. When we do, we may discover that we are capable of much more than we thought.

Maybe that’s what courage really is, not the absence of fear, but moving forward despite being afraid.
