There are so many traditions in India that I love.
From marriages and festivals to rituals associated with different stages of life, many of these traditions have been passed down through generations.
For example, marriages in India are unique to each state, district, and even community. There are major differences as well as small variations in the way marriages are conducted.
Marriage is not just the union of a man and a woman. In India, it is also the union of different families, creating bonds between different branches of those families. There are jovial conversations between the ladies, simple pranks by the youngsters, traditions to follow, and so many rituals that bring everyone together.
During a marriage, we get to meet relatives connected to us through generations, childhood friends, and even new people who may become friends in the future. Overall, it is a time of joy and happiness for the bride, groom, and everyone in their families.
In the past, marriages used to take place over several days. Entire families would leave their homes and stay together at the marriage venue. Those days would be filled with numerous traditions and celebrations. Although many of these traditions have been shortened or simplified nowadays, the memories they created remain.
When we grow old, we can relive these marriage memories and still feel happy. My parents’ marriage video, for example, still brings back so many happy memories for my mother. We also get to see so many of our relatives in that video. Some of them have passed away, while most of the others have grown old.
That is what makes these traditions so special. They are not just rituals; they create memories that stay with us for a lifetime.
For me, Indian marriages are one of the most beautiful traditions we have.
