I think it’s both.
If “who we are” part is good, then we are shaped positively no matter what.
But if it’s bad, then there’s a choice for us to change, where in comes the “experience” part. This will help us change to the positive side.
We should surround ourselves with people with good heart, move towards spiritual side and some such activities to shape ourselves.
Bad circumstances and experiences may occur, but instead of taking the “bad” from it, we should think about the “good” it provides. At that time, to think positively is a most hardest task, which is why we should learn to keep our minds under control through meditation, mindfulness, or similar practices.
Our minds are fickle, it is easily attracted towards the negative side. We have to train them patiently and guide them toward a more positive way of thinking.
To do that, we must stop being ignorant, accept the truth, and seek self-knowledge and wisdom.
