Are Classic Books Really Overrated? My Honest Reading Experience

Daily writing prompt
What’s a classic book that you think is overrated?

I have read a few classics like The Odyssey, Frankenstein, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Unfinished Tales, The Silmarillion, Around the World in Eighty Days, and On the Origin of Species.

Each book has its own feel, and I have enjoyed reading all of them immensely. Maybe there are classics that are overrated and I simply haven’t read them yet.

The classics I’ve read so far have all felt extraordinary in their own way.

Some can feel a bit hectic for a casual reader. For example, On the Origin of Species becomes difficult at times because of the many scientific names and detailed explanations.

Some classics are translations written long ago, so the language feels old-fashioned. Understanding the expressions and writing style of that period can take effort. But that is also part of the fascination. I ended up learning new words, phrases, and even a little about the world of that time through books like Frankenstein and The Odyssey.

Some of my personal collections…

When I first read The Odyssey, the writing style felt very different from modern literature. Even The Lord of the Rings, though written in the last century, reflects an older style of storytelling. The descriptions are deep and patient, often focusing on scenery, nature, and atmosphere around the characters.

So for now, I wouldn’t call any classic I’ve read “overrated.” If I ever do feel that way about one, I’ll probably end up writing a blog post about it. And ultimately this is a never ending journey of reading….

  1. I think I haven’t read books like that, too. I read classic books and I enjoyed them all. Sometimes, time is just the hindrance. 🤭
