Facing Fear on the Way to the Grocery Store: A Childhood Story

Daily writing prompt
List your top 5 grocery store items.

The usual items like

  1. Vegetables
  2. Meat (Mainly on Sunday’s)
  3. Dairy products
  4. Household items
  5. Flour, spices,etc

Since childhood, I was my mom’s agent in bringing these groceries. I remember an incident which happened when I was in primary school.

We had newly shifted to a neighborhood, my mom asked to fetch some household items from nearby shop. On the way, I noticed a street dog with her newborn pups. Protective and fierce, she suddenly charged at me, barking loudly. Terrified, I ran back home.

In those days, dogs were very protective of their pups, and since I was new to the area, this one barked fiercely at me.

I got scolded by my father for running out of fright, typical Indian mentality. We should face our fear and instead I ran away from it. But I learnt this lesson after a very long time.

Since that day, there’s fear for street dogs in me. We didn’t stay in one place, we always moved to new places every few years, so I had navigate my way carefully in all these new places which are usually packed with dogs.

I would always keep count, think of alternate paths, almost like an agent, planned out everything and moved towards my destination(i.e grocery shop😅)

It’s an unforgettable incident.

  1. What a story! You weren’t just a grocery runner; you were a pint-sized secret agent on a high-stakes tactical mission!😅😁
