History as a Storyteller: My Favorite Subject in School

Daily writing prompt
What was your favorite subject in school?

“If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.”
― Rudyard Kipling

My favorite subject has always been History. It fascinated me deeply. In fact, when we bought school textbooks before the academic year began, I would often read the history lessons ahead of time—eager to dive into the stories before classes even started. As time went on, I made a few hobbies like making a list of all the wars fought since ancient times, etc.

I think I saw history as one gigantic storyteller. Stories have always intrigued me. Since childhood, I’ve loved listening to them, reading them, and imagining the worlds they reveal. I was especially drawn to the richness of people, cultures, and architecture. For example, it’s said that during the peak of the Vijayanagara Empire, street vendors in the city sold precious stones as if they were common commodities. That image alone sparks wonder and made me want to time-travel and witness it all firsthand.

If I had a time machine, I’d travel to the great historical periods and witness firsthand the grandeur of empires, the brilliance of architecture, and the beauty of diverse cultures and people.

Apart from history, I also loved Science, especially Biology. I had a deep thirst for knowledge to understand the world of animals and the intricacies of the human body. I used to watch documentaries on Discovery and National Geographic TV channels (and I still do, though not as often). I didn’t travel much back then, but in a way, those shows became my passport. Through them, I journeyed across continents, explored ecosystems, and witnessed the wonders of life—all from my living room.

I’m always grateful for the wonderful teachers I had during school—they nurtured my curiosity and made learning a joy. I truly feel blessed.

Which subject made you feel alive in school? Did you have a favorite textbook you couldn’t wait to open? Share your story in the comments—I’d love to hear it.
