Why I Need Computers—and When I Need to Log Off

Daily writing prompt
Your life without a computer: what does it look like?

Life without a computer? I’d be broke—literally and creatively. My livelihood depends on it. At work, it’s my primary tool; without it, I couldn’t function professionally. At home, while I don’t use it as intensively, it’s still my gateway to blogging, watching anime, YouTube videos, and exploring documentaries.

I own three laptops. Two are in good working condition, while the third has some technical issues and remains unused for now. That said, I enjoy experimenting with operating systems on my older machines. I have installed Lubuntu—a lightweight Linux-based OS—on my oldest laptop. It runs beautifully, especially considering the limited resources of that laptop. Lubuntu has proven to be a perfect match.

But beyond the hardware and software, the computer is my canvas, my library, my workshop. It’s where ideas take shape, where thoughts become words, and where curiosity finds direction. Whether I’m writing a blog post, troubleshooting a technical issue, or diving into a documentary, the computer is my bridge between intention and execution.

The computer isn’t just a device for me; it’s an extension of my life. Without it, I’d lose not only my income but also a vital part of my creative and intellectual expression.

Yet, like any powerful tool, the computer comes with its shadows. Prolonged screen time strains the eyes and stiffens the body, quietly eroding physical well-being. Sometimes, the digital world pulls me away from nature, from silence, from the tactile joys of pen and paper. I’ve learned that while the computer empowers, it must be used with intention. Discipline isn’t just about waking early—it’s also about knowing when to log off.
