Cooking Fails: My Puliogare Disaster

Daily writing prompt
Write about your most epic baking or cooking fail.

“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” – Virginia Woolf

I haven’t done much cooking over the years—I’d still call myself a novice. My earliest memory in the kitchen is making coffee as a kid. As an adult, I usually step in only when my family’s away—whether it’s for emergencies or casual visits to relatives. That’s when I have to fend for myself.

I can manage a few simple dishes: rice, Maggi, omelettes, and some basic rice varieties like Puliogare and lemon rice. Nothing fancy, just the essentials to get by.

My worst culinary adventure was with Puliogare. I misjudged the heat, and the entire basin turned black—the rice came out dark and smoky, far from edible.

Thankfully, my mom and sis are far better cooks. I feel lucky to enjoy the meals they prepare—there’s a comfort in their cooking that I haven’t quite mastered yet.
