A Book shop that reads more than it sells

If you were going to open up a shop, what would you sell?

“So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away, and in its place you can install a lovely bookshelf on the wall.”

Roald Dahl

Maybe a book shop…. Mine would be different. It would be a place where books are read more than they are sold. I imagine myself tucked into a corner, surrounded by shelves that feel like old friends.

Most days, I’d simply read—losing myself in mythologies, philosophies, and stories that stretch across time. Occasionally, I’d sell a book. Not for profit, but for connection. To pass on a piece of the world to someone who’s ready to receive it.

I’d talk with fellow readers about the genres that move us, the characters we carry long after the last page, and the books that changed how we see ourselves. We’d swap recommendations like secrets. We’d debate endings, celebrate prose, and mourn the stories that felt too short.

I may or may not open this shop…..it’s just a nice feel-good image in my mind.

Of course, I’d love to have my own library — but more than just owning it, what truly matters is the pursuit of knowledge within it. That space would be sacred, not for display, but for deep exploration and learning. I had made blog post on this too – A Book Shop that Reads more than it sells […]
