If My Life Were a Book: The Meaning Behind My “True Name”

Daily writing prompt
If there were a biography about you, what would the title be?

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” — Aristotle

The title of my biography would be very long. It cannot be captured in just a few words, because it reflects the journey of my life so far.

This reminds me of the concept of “True Names” from the YA high fantasy series The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini. In it, a True Name is a word or phrase in the Ancient Language that perfectly describes a person’s essential nature, their identity, character, values, and inner truth.

Such names can be very long, depending on a person’s personality. And once someone knows your true name, they gain complete power you, which makes it both powerful and dangerous.

In the series, the protagonist spends a long time reflecting deeply to discover his own true name. It’s a unique and fascinating idea.

I believe we all carry a “true name” within ourselves, and it changes whenever a deep transformation happens inside us. Mine wouldn’t be a single word, it would be a long sentence, and it may change again in the future.

Finding that true name takes long self-reflection and real self-awareness. And once you discover it, you feel renewed because you finally see yourself clearly, including the flaws you can now begin to repair.
