The Psychology Behind My Unfinished To-Do List

Daily writing prompt
Something on your “to-do list” that never gets done.

Considering I’m probably one of the laziest people around 😅, I have many to-do lists and honestly, most of the items on them never get done.

Since childhood, I believed that some things happen only when they are destined to happen. Like small pieces slowly falling into the right place to form a complete picture. When everything aligns, the work automatically gets done. I held onto this belief for a long time.

But in recent years, my thinking has changed.

Now I believe that if we truly want something to happen, we must create the path ourselves. Otherwise, we simply leave it to destiny and hope it falls into place someday. In the end, it is always our choice — do we really want to do it or not? Do we want it badly enough?

If we truly want something, we first need motivation. After that comes consistency. And behind both of these must be a strong reason, a clear “why” that pushes us forward.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about procrastination, especially my own habit of delaying things.

Why do we procrastinate?

  • Maybe our mind is tired and doesn’t want to think.
  • Maybe our body is exhausted and doesn’t want to move.
  • Sometimes we are already doing one task, and another important task interrupts us. Instead of finishing the first one, we jump between tasks and end up completing none.
  • While doing task A, and suddenly we may need to do do task B and in this case as I don’t want to break the flow, I’ll continue doing task A instead of task B.
  • Often there is a lack of motivation.
  • And sometimes our mind behaves like a drunken monkey, restless, uncontrollable, and refusing to listen to logic. It simply does whatever it wants in the moment.

Conclusion:
If we can learn to control our mind, and keep both our mind and body healthy, we can reduce procrastination. And once procrastination reduces, we slowly start moving forward in life.
